Snorkel & Scuba Diving in Roatan on the World’s Second Largest Reef System

Ask anyone who enjoys snorkeling and diving, and they’ll have heard of Roatan’s underwater bounty. The waters that surround the island are some of the most prolific for sheer sub-aquatic exploration, with more than 130 snorkeling and diving sites available.

Guests of the Blue Ocean Reef Resort will have instant access to the second largest reef system in the world, the Mesoamerican Reef, which runs just offshore from our own beach and extends along the coasts of Honduras, Belize, Guatemala and Mexico. This is truly a scuba diver’s paradise, providing a full range of options for all levels of marine explorers. There are wrecks, pristine coralline gardens, tunnels and other types of dive sites around Roatan, many of which are located right off the island’s beaches. The Mesoamerican Reef’s diversity both in types of coral and marine wonders is enormous, due in part to its relative good health; red mangroves, which serve as a natural filtration for the reefs, protect a significant portion of it.

Hundreds of species of fish and countless other creatures make their home here; among these, you’re sure to spot fairy basslet, angel fish, parrot fish, octopus, starfish, eels, anemones…the list is almost infinite, yet each spotting more exciting than the last. Add to that friendly schools of dolphin that may show up at any time and put on a show, or manatees and sea turtles just passing by. The time spent in these waters is nothing short of spectacular.

Blue Ocean Reef Resort’s guests can sign up for snorkeling and scuba diving lessons, whether you’re a beginner or have received prior instruction. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to see for yourself some of the most astonishing creatures to ever swim the planet’s seas.
